Have you ever wondered how crowded a city or country really is? That’s where population density comes in! It tells us how many people live in a specific area — and it’s a super helpful way to compare places of all sizes.
Let’s break it down, show you how it works, and introduce you to a calculator that makes it easy!

🧮 Try the Population Density Calculator
Want to calculate how dense your city, town, or region is?
Just enter:
- Region name
- The total population of that region
- The area (in km² or mi²)
Click on add region and it will calculate the population density, plot it.
You can repeat the steps above to add another region. The plots will compare the densities.
🙋 What Is Population Density?
Population density is a measure of how many people live in a certain amount of space.
In simple terms:
Population Density = Total Population ÷ Area
It’s usually expressed in people per square kilometer (km²) or per square mile (mi²).
So if a town has 10,000 people and is 5 km² in size:
Population Density = 10,000 ÷ 5 = 2,000 people/km²
That means it’s a pretty packed place!

📍 Why Population Density Matters
Population density helps us understand:
- How urban or rural a place is
- Planning for housing, roads, and public services
- Resource distribution like schools, hospitals, and water
- Environmental impact and land use
It’s a key stat for governments, researchers, and city planners — and super interesting for travelers and curious minds too!
