Baofeng Channel (MR) Mode vs Frequency Mode

Baofeng radios, like the popular UV-5R model, are versatile tools used by amateur radio enthusiasts and professionals alike. In this post we explain the difference between Frequency Mode and Channel Mode (also known as Memory Recall mode).

This article will explain the functions of each mode, how to switch between them, and practical scenarios for their use.

As a quick summary of the differences:

Frequency Mode offers flexibility and is excellent for exploration and testing, while Channel Mode provides convenience and organization for regular use.

Frequency Mode (VFO Mode)

Frequency Mode, also known as Variable Frequency Oscillator (VFO) mode, allows you to manually enter and tune to any frequency within the radio’s operating range. This mode provides flexibility and is particularly useful for:

Exploration and Scanning:

  • Users can manually enter different frequencies to find active channels.
  • Ideal for testing and finding new frequencies.

On-the-Fly Adjustments:

  • Quickly change frequencies without needing to rely on pre-programmed channels.
  • Useful for temporary communication needs and emergency situations.

Setting Up and Calibration:

  • Allows users to test antenna setups and make equipment adjustments.

How to Use Frequency Mode:

  • Switching to Frequency Mode: Press the VFO/MR button until the display shows a frequency (e.g., 145.000 MHz).
  • Entering Frequencies: Use the keypad to input the desired frequency directly.
  • Adjust Settings: Modify settings like frequency step, offset direction, and offset frequency directly.

Channel Mode (MR Mode)

Channel Mode, or Memory Recall (MR) mode, allows you to select from pre-programmed channels. Each channel can store specific frequencies and settings, making this mode highly convenient for regular use and organized communication. Channels are indicated by integer numbers that have been preset.

Convenience and Quick Access:

  • Pre-programmed channels make it easy to switch between frequently used frequencies.
  • Reduces the need for manual frequency entry every time.

Organized Communication:

  • Group channels by purpose, such as local repeaters, emergency frequencies, or personal communication channels.
  • Ensures consistent settings across commonly used frequencies.

Ease of Use:

  • Simplifies operation, especially in high-stress situations or for beginners.

How to Use Channel Mode:

  • Switching to Channel Mode: Press the VFO/MR button until the display shows a channel number (e.g., CH-01) or a programmed channel name.
  • Selecting Channels: Use the channel knob or keypad to scroll through the pre-programmed channels.

Practical Uses and Scenarios

Frequency Mode:

  • Exploring New Frequencies: When traveling or in a new location, use Frequency Mode to search for active local frequencies.
  • Emergency Situations: Quickly tune to a specific frequency that is not pre-programmed to get updates or provide help.
  • Testing Equipment: Use Frequency Mode to test new antennas or other equipment without altering pre-set channels.

Channel Mode:

  • Routine Communication: For daily use, where you communicate over the same frequencies regularly.
  • Event Coordination: Pre-program channels for different teams or departments to streamline communication during events.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Set up channels for emergency services, family communication, and local repeaters to ensure quick access in times of need.

Switching Between Modes

To switch between Frequency Mode and Channel Mode on most Baofeng radios:

  • To Frequency Mode: Press the VFO/MR button until the display shows a frequency.
  • To Channel Mode: Press the VFO/MR button until the display shows a channel number or name.
