Formula for Converting Average Voltage to RMS Voltage

For a full-wave rectified sinusoidal waveform, the conversion from average voltage to RMS voltage is based on the following:

VRMS = Vavg × π/(2×√2)

Where:

  • VRMS is the RMS voltage,
  • Vavg is the average voltage,
  • π or pi is approximately 3.1416

Example Calculation

Let’s say you have a full-wave rectified signal with an average voltage of 10 V. Use the calculator to convert this to RMS voltage value of 11.11 V.

Why RMS Voltage Is Important

  • Power Calculations: RMS voltage represents the true effective power of an AC signal. For instance, when calculating the power delivered to a load, the RMS voltage is used in the formula P = VRMS × IRMS where P is power in watts, VRMS is the RMS voltage, and IRMS​ is the RMS current).
