G915 is a sophisticated wireless keyboard with many bells and whistles compared with older keyboards. In particular, the keyboard offers multiple ways to connect over wireless.
Despite the advanced technology in the G915 it sometimes has an issue with the wireless not connecting. This can be very frustrating especially when I’m in the middle of doing something important.
In this article I have posted tips and tricks for getting your G915 connected. Without further ado, let’s get into it.
Table of Contents
Power ON the G915 Keyboard
Make sure that your keyboard is powered on. This is the most basic first step that many people forget.
As shown in the picture, the switch is located on the upper left side. If the G915 is not powered on, it will not connect.
Charge the Keyboard
Make sure the G915 battery is charged. If this is your first time using the keyboard – note that it starts out low on battery.
This is the sequence of lights that indicate battery status:
- Pulses green when charging
- Shows green momentarily on startup when battery is above 15%.
- Shows red when keyboard needs charging – this happens when the battery level below 15%
- No light when discharged
Once the keyboard is fully charged, see if the connectivity issues persist. If so then let’s go to the next step.
Check Wireless Connectivity
The G915 supports two wireless technologies: Lightspeed and Bluetooth.
The keyboard uses only one technology to connect at any given time with a single PC. In the following we have provided tips on how to solve problems with each.
Lightspeed troubleshooting
If you want to use Lightspeed to connect your keyboard to the laptop, first make sure the dongle is plugged into a USB port.
Press the Lightspeed button on the keyboard. If the keyboard fails to connect, try plugging the receiver dongle into another USB port.
A couple of other do’s and don’ts
- Don’t plug the dongle into a USB hub.
- Do move the USB dongle closer to the keyboard using the extension cable. This will make the wireless connection more reliable.
- Do remove sources of RF interference like Wi-Fi access points, microwave ovens, cellphones and other wireless devices from near the keyboard.
- Don’t use a USB 3.0 port. Use a USB 2.0 port instead.
Bluetooth troubleshooting
Your PC or laptop will need to have Bluetooth built into it. Alternatively you will have to use an external Bluetooth dongle.
Connect the Keyboard to the laptop using the steps in the picture below.
Holding down the “Bluetooth” button on the G915 keyboard until it starts to flash rapidly. When asked to connect with the keyboard you will get a sign with a pairing code.
The PC or laptop needs to be paired with your keyboard. To do this you will need to enter this code.
- Go to the Control Panel
- Click on Devices and Printers,
- Click on Add a device
- When asked to enter the code, type the keyboard code
- This should get your keyboard connected via Bluetooth
- Sometimes you also might need to remove association with another keyboard prior to pairing. For this “Remove Device” on one of the HID Keyboard Devices and then it should let you pair again with the G915
Update Firmware
If you’re still having problems connecting the G915 to your laptop, try updating the firmware. Note that this has to be done for both the Lightspeed receiver and the keyboard. Updating only one will not work.
- As a first step, plug your keyboard and lightspeed dongle into separate USB ports so they can be updated. Make sure that Logitech GHUB software is installed on the PC.
- Logitech G HUB will give you a pop up to update the firmware
- Proceed with it.
- Once Logitech G Hub says it’s safe, unplug your keyboard.
- Logitech G Hub will now show a pop up to update the firmware of your receiver.
- Next follow the Logitech G Hub instructions for pairing. They actually work this time.
Reboot your PC. The G915 should pair with the PC now.
Switch USB port
Lightspeed relies on the receiver dongle. It has to be plugged in properly and the USB port has to be functional.
You can either switch the dongle to another port. Alternatively you can also try plugging another USB device into the port you were using.
Another test is to try the head set with other computers.
Remove sources of Interference
A common problem that users experience is an intermittent loss of connectivity. The most common reason for this is Radio interference. What does this mean?
Radio Frequency (RF) interference results when wireless devices such as Wi-Fi routers, Microwave ovens and other 2.4 GHz devices are operating in the vicinity of one another.
Radio waves are invisible. As a result you will not be able to see this interference. The effects however are often obvious. Devices will disconnect when you least expect them to. You might also experience periodic dropouts in the audio or stutter.
One way to eliminate this issue is to move 802.11 routers and other such devices away from the headset.
The other technique is to use the USB extender cable to move the Lightspeed receiver closer to the headset. A line-of-sight connection improves the received signal strength and reduces the impact of RF interference.
Ideally I suggest both of the above for maximum wireless link reliability.
